Yesterday was a momentous day in nearby Ardrossan, the opening of the new supermarket. Doesn't sound like much, I know, but it was very exciting. Up until now we have all battled around a dark, dingy, tiny building which obviously grew organically from a corner store, bumping into each other every two feet or so.
The family who owns the supermarket decided to do something about it and I must say that what they have done is pretty "city-schmick". The aisles are wide, it's well-lit ... in fact, everything that city folks take for granted in a modern supermarket. There are gourmet deli and bakery sections, a great fruit and veg section and lots and lots more variety than before. There's even an express lane.
The staff have worked under pressure for a couple of weeks now in keeping the supermarket running as well as setting out and stocking the new building, but they in their spruced-up new uniforms and the looks on their faces yesterday was worth it.
Not a big deal, you think, but really, to a small town like this, it is. And in some distant future when this supermarket needs to be upgraded because it looks shabby, worn-out and old-fashioned, I will be able to say that I was there on the very first day that it opened.
